Product introduction The F-4EJ Kai is a fighter aircraft of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force that evolved from the F-4EJ Phantom II.
It was decided to adopt the F-4EJ as a successor to the F-86F in 1961, and deployment began in 1961.As more than 20 years have passed since its introduction, the F-4EJ was adopted in 1972 in order to extend the life of the aircraft and improve its capabilities. We have been conducting research and development since
As a result, in February 1981, the modification plan as F-4EJ Kai was announced.
This modification mainly involves improving combat capabilities and adopting the ASIP inspection method, which is a measure to extend the lifespan of the aircraft.
To improve combat capabilities, we first installed the AN/APG-66J fire control radar, which is a modified version of the Westinghouse AN/APG-66 used in the F-16 for the F-4EJ.
This radar was adopted after the forced landing of the MIG-25 in Hakodate, and is a small pulse Doppler radar that is suitable for detecting aircraft flying at low altitudes over the sea from above.
Along with this, the on-board computer was changed from the previous analog type to a digital type computer.
This enabled the integration of weapons systems and the use of the domestically produced ASM-1 anti-ship missile.
Navigation equipment has also been changed from analog to digital.
Navigation accuracy has been significantly improved by digitizing the inertial navigation device, and it also has a target mark function that allows you to mark up to three target points.
In addition, as a means of defending your aircraft, the radar warning system has been modified to improve its capabilities, and detailed data will be displayed on the CRT screen in the cockpit.
Additionally, in order to simplify the pilot's operating procedures, the HOTAS concept has been adopted, allowing various operations to be performed while keeping hands on the control stick and throttle lever.
Along with these improvements, a new head-up display has been installed to display the processed data, allowing the pilot to read the data while facing straight ahead.
The F-4EJ Kai adopted the ASIP aircraft management system to extend the life of the aircraft.
This is a system that allows the flight performance data of each aircraft to be managed by computer and the fatigue level of each aircraft to be managed individually.
This ASIP method allows for approximately 2,000 hours of life extension per aircraft.
The F-4EJ Kai's main mission is interception combat, but its ground attack capabilities are also much improved compared to the F-4EJ.As the support fighter F-1 will be retired in the future, the F-4EJ Kai's 1. A squadron will be assigned to support combat missions.
