G-SHOCK, the tough watch that has continued to evolve in pursuit of tireless strength since its release in 1983, is introducing a new model with a design motif based on the popular work of Katsushika Hokusai, an ukiyo-e artist active during the Edo period who is widely known both in Japan and overseas.

The watch features popular pieces "Fine Wind, Clear Morning" and "Under the Great Wave off Kanagawa" from the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, a masterpiece by Katsushika Hokusai, who is highly acclaimed worldwide in the field of ukiyo-e, a representative work of art from Japan, where G-SHOCK was born.

Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji is the breakthrough work of Katsushika Hokusai, depicting Japan's highest mountain, Mount Fuji, as seen from various locations and other scenes of Japan.
It established the genre of landscape painting in ukiyo-e and has been highly acclaimed overseas.

The base model is the iconic standard digital watch, the DW-5600, with a bold design on the dial.

The LED backlight displays the kanji character "Japan," and the back cover also has the same character engraved on it.

In addition, in keeping with the origins of ukiyo-e in Japan, we have also paid particular attention to the place of production, "made in Japan.
"
In order to appeal globally, the packaging has also been specially designed.

"Fine Wind, Clear Weather" is one of 46 prints from Hokusai Katsushika's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji.

This work depicts Mt.
Fuji from the front on a large scale, with a sea of trees at the bottom of the screen, mackerel clouds in the sky, and a snowy field remaining on the summit of Mt.
Fuji.

The word "Kaifu" comes from the Book of Songs and the Wakan Roeishu, and means the soft southern wind that blows in summer.

Prior to this painting, there were other examples of Red Fuji, such as Norosuke's "Rock and Rose Peaks" (owned by the Wakayama Wakimura Scholarship Association), which may have influenced Hokusai.

There is no information in the title or description that indicates it is morning.

If the morning sun is turning it red, the snow should also be rubbed red.

For these reasons, some say that the brown surface of Mount Fuji was painted red to emphasize how it is brightly lit under a clear sky, and as the phenomenon of "Red Fuji" became known, the name "Red Fuji" became widespread.

"Under the Great Wave off Kanagawa" is one of 46 prints from Hokusai Katsushika's "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji"
Currently, it is also written as "Kanagawa Oki Namiura.
"
Large horizontal format nishiki-e
It is one of the three great works in the series, along with "Fine Wind, Clear Morning" and "Yamashita Hakuu," and is the most widely known masterpiece in his entire career.

The dramatic composition shows three boats being tossed about by the violently high, swirling waves, with the viewer glimpsing Mount Fuji in the distance between the rolling waves.

Every stream of water, the swell of waves, the movement of a boat along the waves, and the gentle ridge of Mount Fuji are all components of a logarithmic spiral that is folded over and over again.

There are various theories about the model location.

"Off the coast of Kanagawa" is what is now Kanagawa Ward, Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture, but the three ships in the picture are called oshi-so ships, and were used to transport seafood from the Boso Peninsula to Edo, so there is a theory that they were depicting a view of Fuji from off the coast of Kisarazu, on the opposite bank of Kanagawa in Tokyo Bay.
