・Frequency response unaffected by distanceThe SF-24 is a phantom powered stereo ribbon microphone based on Royer's popular SF-12 model. Inheriting the high audio performance of the SF-12, the SF-24 combines exceptional stereo imaging and separation with Royer's proprietary active ribbon microphone circuitry. Boasting -38dB output, the SF-24 delivers 14dB more output than the non-powered SF-12, bringing it on par with a typical condenser microphone. Special components and custom FETs ensure ultra-low self-noise of less than 18dB. Like the SF-12, the SF-24 houses two stereo matched ribbon microphones in a single microphone. Like the "Blumlein pair" configuration, they are angled 90 degrees, with one oriented 45 degrees to the left and one oriented 45 degrees to the right. The ribbon transducer's pole-piece construction produces a wide, balanced frequency response without sharp peaks or dips. The 1.8-micron-thin ribbons deliver exceptional transient response. The excellent frequency response ensures that tonal color is unaffected by changes in microphone distance, orientation, or axis. The SF-24's connection cable includes a 5-pin XLR-to-two 3-pin XLR Y-adapter, labeled "Upper" and "Lower" for the upper and lower capsules of the microphone. GainRoyer's active ribbon microphones offer sensitivity comparable to that of condenser microphones, allowing them to be used with any microphone or preamplifier. Typical ribbon microphones are 15-30dB less sensitive than condenser microphones, so recording quiet sources like acoustic instruments, vocals, and ambience requires a high-quality, high-output mic preamplifier. The SF-24's fully balanced, discrete head amplifiers utilize toroidal transformers and ultra-low-noise FETs to deliver a high output of -38dB on both channels. This eliminates the need to worry about microphone or preamp gain when using the SF-24. Even more importantly, despite its high output, the SF-24 does not amplify self-noise. Phantom power operation allows operation below unity level, minimizing noise generation. This patent-pending system has been years in the making. Impedance Matching: The SF-24's ribbon element is always optimally loaded by the active circuitry. The SF-24 delivers 100% of its tonal potential, regardless of the input characteristics of the connected microphone preamp. The low-impedance output eliminates signal loss, even over long cable runs. Proper impedance matching is essential when using ribbon microphones. Mismatching can result in a loss of core and low end, reduced sensitivity, and overall poor performance. Royer ribbon microphones provide optimal resistance regardless of the downstream preamp, ensuring consistent performance and eliminating the risk of ribbon element damage from phantom power, incorrect cable connections, or inrush currents. Recording: The SF-24 excels at "audio-realistic" stereo recording, faithfully reproducing not only the instrument but also the acoustic characteristics of the microphone, depending on the microphone positioning. Furthermore, the high-sensitivity design and impedance matching circuitry allow you to select any microphone or preamp, ensuring consistent, stable recording in a variety of environments. Recording in Mono The SF-24's phase response is excellent between both microphones, allowing you to combine two channels into one mono track without phase correction. This is particularly useful when recording a wide sound field in mono, such as a singer who tends to miss the sweet spot. Either side of the SF-24 can also be used independently as a mono microphone.
