     Description (2,955 characters)
In the autumn of 1988, an unprecedented train was operated from Europe to Japan.

Its name is "Orient Express 1988".

The train departed from Paris' Gare de Lyon on September 7th, traveling by rail over 14,500km across Eurasia, passing through France, West Germany, East Germany, Poland, the Soviet Union, and China, before being transported by sea to Kudamatsu, Yamaguchi Prefecture, where it was refurbished for domestic use within Japan and operated as a train bound for Tokyo.
This marked the world record for the longest run of a single train, at 15,494km.

After that, it was operated within Japan for about three months, and became a hot topic when it traveled through the recently completed Seikan Tunnel to Hokkaido.

After the service ended, the passenger cars that had come to Japan returned to Europe, but after some time, Pullman Car 4158 returned to Japan alone in April 2004 and was stored in the Hakone Lalique Museum, which opened in March 2005.
