This standing statue of Amida Buddha is primarily worshipped as the principal image in the Jodo sect of Buddhism. It is crafted from durable, beautiful boxwood. One of the requirements for a Buddha statue is a smooth, lustrous surface, making boxwood an ideal material for Buddhist statues. The eyes of the statue's face are crafted using a modern technique dating back to the late Heian period, in which glass beads are embedded. The principal image is the Buddha idealized by each sect, and Buddhist statues are created as a representation of Buddhist teachings. It is enshrined on the top shelf in the center of the Buddhist altar, where it watches over us from its highest position.
