Directed by Kei Ishikawa, the talented director behind "The Idiots" and "The Honeybee and the Distant Thunder," this film is the first adaptation of "Arc," a masterpiece short story by world-renowned 21st century author Ken Liu. The film stars Kyoko Yoshine, winner of the Japan Academy Award for Best New Actress for her work in "Kasane" and "Sakura no Hana." The story is set in the not-too-distant future. At age 17, Rina, seeking freedom in life, separated from her newborn son and living a nomadic life, meets her mentor, Emma, at age 19, and begins working under her as a creator of "Bodyworks." Emma is a leading expert in "Bodyworks," performing a procedure called plastination on corpses to preserve the deceased in their natural state. Emma's younger brother, Amane, further develops this plastination technique, eventually achieving "immortality" through a method of stopping aging. Rina becomes the first woman in the world to undergo the procedure, and is granted the ability to live forever in the body of a 30-year-old. But... The supporting cast includes Terajima Shinobu as Emma, Okada Masaki as Amane, Baisho Chieko, Kazebuki Jun, and Kobayashi Kaoru. The music is by Sebu Yuko, who has worked on film scores for films such as "Strobe Edge," "River's Edge," and "The Forest of Wool and Steel," as well as pop music collaborating with Moriyama Naotaro and Mr. Children. From dark songs to light rhythms and beautiful melodies, the music mesmerizes viewers, seamlessly blending with the visuals as if each note were breathing.
