The D850 is Nikon's first digital SLR camera to feature a back-illuminated Nikon FX-format CMOS sensor, combining 45.75 effective megapixels with ISO 64-25600 compatibility. Despite its high effective pixel count of 45.75 million, the D5 achieves ISO 25600 and, in conjunction with the same EXPEED 5 image-processing engine as the D5, effectively suppresses noise while maintaining sharpness even at high sensitivities. By optimizing the sensor sensitivity and the amount of light information accumulated in the photodiode, a base sensitivity of ISO 64 is achieved, delivering images with a wide dynamic range across the entire sensitivity range. Furthermore, the camera features no optical low-pass filter, making the most of the high resolving power of NIKKOR lenses. By fully utilizing the potential of the 45.75 million pixels, images can be enlarged while maintaining high image quality, producing images suitable for large prints up to A2 size and 8K digital signage. The tilting 3.2-inch, 2.36 million-dot touchscreen monitor features a versatile touchscreen. The large 3.2-inch monitor supports touch operations such as menu settings, shooting, fast image switching using the frame advance bar (similar to the D5), and text entry, including copyright information. It also features a three-axis hinge structure that allows for free tilting over a wide vertical range. Even when the monitor is extended upward, it is not obstructed by the viewfinder eyepiece, and downward extension is also smooth even when the camera is mounted on a tripod, providing greater flexibility in the angle of your still and video capture. The high-resolution 2.36 million-dot monitor allows you to check the focus in detail with the enlarged display. During Live View, you can magnify the image up to approximately 16x using the magnify button. In single-frame playback, you can zoom in and out to the touched position by pinching out or double-tapping. By assigning "Toggle to magnified view" to the multi-selector center button in the Custom Menu (f2), you can display the image at the selected magnification centered on the focus point during single-frame playback. Button illumination and control layout for ease of use in low-light conditions: The D850's excellent low-light performance, such as high image quality at high sensitivities and low-light AF/AE compatibility, is effectively utilized in low-light shooting thanks to the illuminated buttons on the left rear of the body and the release mode dial, which feature transmitted illumination. Camera settings and operation are easy, even in low light. Buttons and dials are ergonomically positioned to fit comfortably in the hand. A new sub-selector has been placed on the rear, in the same position as the D5, enhancing operability for photographers using both models. A high-speed, high-precision 153-point AF system maximizes the sharpness of the high pixel count. The same 153-point AF system as the D5 provides 153 focus points, including 99 cross-type sensors for easier subject capture, providing denser coverage—130% wider than the D810. A dedicated AF engine with high calculation speeds executes multiple processes in parallel with the sequence control microcomputer. Simultaneous focus measurement on all 153 points achieves overall faster calculations and control. Eight AF-area modes are available to suit different subjects, including "Single-point AF," which allows for precise focusing with a small focus point, and "Group-area AF," which makes it easier to capture moving subjects. Auto-area AF automatically prioritizes focusing on faces when they are recognized, leaving the focusing to the camera, allowing the photographer to concentrate on composition and the shutter opportunity. The center focus point supports -4 EV*1, while all other focus points support -3 EV. AF is possible even in low light or with low-contrast subjects. Even when using a teleconverter, all 153 focus points are effective at brightness levels up to a combined f/5.6. Even at a combined f/8, all 15 focus points are effective. Pinpoint AF: Easier to Focus on a Smaller Area During still image live view, Pinpoint AF is effective when you need to focus on small subjects like the pistils of a flower in close-up photography. With focus points roughly one-quarter the size of those in normal-area AF, it enables highly accurate focusing on a very small area. Optical viewfinder with approximately 0.75x magnification: The largest viewfinder magnification in the history of Nikon FX-format digital SLR cameras, approximately 0.75x. The field of view is approximately 100% vertically and horizontally. The optical system employs a high-refractive-index aspherical lens and a new condenser lens to ensure a long eyepoint, allowing for easy confirmation of the subject and composition through the large viewfinder image. The viewfinder display employs an OLED display element for high contrast and excellent visibility, even in bright outdoor conditions. Durable magnesium alloy body with advanced weather-resistant and dust-resistant performance: The lightweight and durable magnesium alloy body is lightweight while maintaining high rigidity and durability. Effective sealing at the joints ensures high dust- and weather-resistant performance, allowing you to shoot with confidence even in bad weather. This allows for reliable landscape photography in challenging shooting environments, as well as interval timer photography, which often requires long periods of outdoor shooting. Negative Film Digitization easily converts negative film into 45.44-megapixel digital data. Easily convert color and monochrome negative film (35mm format) into 45.44-megapixel (recording pixel count) digital data. Simply attach the optional Film Digitize Adapter ES-2 to a D850 with a lens such as the AF-S Micro NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8G ED, load the film into the Strip Film Holder FH-4 or Slide Mount Holder FH-5 (both included with the ES-2), and shoot. The image is automatically inverted and saved as a JPEG. This process is quicker and easier than using a film scanner. While digitizing, you can connect the D850 to a large-screen TV via HDMI cable to share your photos with others.
