The new lens badge designates this lens as the first New Generation Star Lens for APS-C SLR cameras. It features the same high-quality exterior design as the latest lens lineup.
The angle of view is equivalent to 17-27.5mm in 35mm full-frame format, enabling dynamic expression. With a minimum focusing distance of 30cm, this wide-angle lens allows for effective background blur. The lens employs an Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) Glass Aspherical Lens that combines the properties of both an aspherical lens element to suppress spherical aberration and ED glass to reduce chromatic aberration. While meeting the high performance requirements of a new-generation star lens, the lens utilizes a minimum number of lens elements, resulting in a compact and lightweight design. A revised manufacturing process allows for a high-precision coating that more closely matches the theoretical design values. This next-generation multi-coating boasts high hardness and durability, reducing reflectivity by 50% or more compared to conventional multi-coatings, and providing exceptionally effective suppression of ghosting and flare. The lens features an AW (All Weather) dust- and dust-resistant design that prevents water and dust from entering the lens interior. Pairing it with a dust- and dust-resistant PENTAX digital SLR camera enhances durability and reliability in rainy, foggy, and splash-proof environments. This focusing mechanism, unique to previous products, decouples the focus ring from the focus lens group when activated. By preventing the focus position from accidentally shifting after precise focusing, it improves usability when photographing starry skies and celestial bodies.
The exterior design makes it easy to attach a lens heater to prevent condensation. The zoom and focus rings and lens barrel have a discreet shape to make it easy to wrap a belt-type heater around them, and there is also a groove near the tip for a wire-type heater. The structure is also designed so that the optical system is connected to metal parts, making for good heat conduction.
