This is the first FE lens to offer both the beautiful bokeh and high resolution you expect from a G lens. Equipped with optical image stabilization, this is the first E-mount lens to offer high-precision, 1:1 magnification shooting with handheld shooting. It achieves the soft, beautiful bokeh you expect from a G lens by providing balanced correction for spherical aberration and other aberrations. The floating focus mechanism suppresses aberration fluctuations due to shooting distance, ensuring sharp, in-focus images from close up to long distances. It also incorporates Sony's advanced technologies, including Nano AR coating and Super ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) glass. The two focus lens groups are driven by a Direct Drive SSM (DDSSM) system, which boasts excellent stopping position accuracy and quiet operation. This system satisfies the demanding requirements of both still and video photography. Furthermore, it offers the operability required for macro photography, including a Ring Slide Switch that allows for quick AF/MF switching by simply sliding the focus ring back and forth, Internal Focusing, which keeps the lens fixed at the entire length without extending it, and a Focus Hold button for quick focus lock. The lens is also designed with dust and weather resistance in mind. *Although the lens is dust and weather resistant, it does not completely prevent dust and water from entering. We pursue the ideal bokeh characteristic of G lenses, focusing on the beautiful bokeh that G lenses are known for. The natural, soft bokeh highlights the main subject. In addition to a design that takes spherical aberration into consideration to prevent double-line bokeh, each lens is individually adjusted during the manufacturing process to achieve smooth contours in the bokeh image. Furthermore, lateral chromatic aberration and axial chromatic aberration are also reduced. In addition, the specially designed nine-blade circular diaphragm, designed for superior bokeh, maintains a perfect circle from infinity to close-up focus at maximum aperture.
Clear image quality, even at the periphery, regardless of shooting distance. This macro lens, which experiences significant changes in shooting distance, employs a floating mechanism (close-range aberration correction mechanism) to suppress aberration fluctuations at close distances and reduce the amount of focus group movement. By shifting the two focus lens groups in accordance with the shooting distance, sharp images are achieved all the way to the periphery, even at close distances. The floating mechanism also contributes to the compactness of the lens.
Nano AR Coating minimizes flare and ghosting for clear, high-quality image quality. A certain percentage of light incident on the lens surface is reflected, and this unwanted reflection can cause image-degrading flare and ghosting. Sony's proprietary coating technology, Nano AR Coating, features a regularly arranged structure of nano-sized (1 nanometer is 1 billionth of a meter) irregularities, eliminating boundaries on the lens surface and significantly reducing light reflectivity. This coating on the lens surface achieves approximately one-fifth the reflectivity of standard anti-reflection coatings. It minimizes unwanted light reflection, suppresses flare and ghosting caused by internal reflections, and delivers clear, crisp image quality with deep blacks.
Focus Driven by Direct Drive SSM: The focus drive utilizes Direct Drive SSM (DDSSM), which drives the focus lens element using the ultrasonic expansion and contraction motion of a piezoelectric element. By using Direct Drive SSM, which provides highly accurate stopping positions for the second and fourth groups of the floating focus, the heavy lens elements required for a macro lens are precisely controlled, enabling precise focusing. Furthermore, its exceptional quietness makes it ideal for photographing animals and insects, as well as for video recording. It also excels at dealing with the fine back-and-forth motion (wobbling) that occurs during focusing during video recording.
This lens is the first α macro lens to feature optical image stabilization, providing superior performance for handheld shooting. Capture sharp subjects without the need for a tripod. In addition, a highly responsive linear motor is used to drive the heavy vibration-proof lens, providing quick and precise image blur correction.
The lens offers the operability required for macro photography. The "Ring Slide Switch" allows for quick switching between AF and MF by simply sliding the focus ring back and forth. Additionally, the lens features a "Focus Hold Button" for instant focus lock, even in continuous AF mode, "Internal Focusing" that maintains the overall lens length during focusing, and a "Magnification/Distance Scale" essential for macro photography.
