A "Limited Lens" that focuses on image quality and texture.Following the concept of the "Limited Lens" series, we pursued the "flavor of the lens" by repeatedly evaluating image quality using actual images rather than just numerical evaluation using test equipment, and feeding this back into the design.When shooting distant subjects, uniform image quality is obtained even at the edges, and by narrowing the aperture even further, clear and sharp images with high overall resolution are obtained across the entire frame. On the other hand, imaging characteristics change when shooting close-ups. At maximum aperture, the focal plane remains sharp, while out-of-focus areas softly and gradually blur, creating a sense of the subject standing out in the distance, while the exaggerated perspective characteristic of an ultra-wide-angle lens is enhanced. From landscapes to snapshots and close-ups at a minimum focal length of 18cm, this lens delivers a variety of subject-specific imaging characteristics. The lens' exterior, crafted from machined aluminum for the lens barrel, hood, and cap, exudes a luxurious feel, resulting in a finish that's a joy to own. Utilizing the latest optical technology, the optical system employs four ED glass elements and one Super ED glass element to effectively reduce chromatic aberration, eliminating noticeable color bleeding not only in the focal plane but also in out-of-focus images. Furthermore, by using a large-diameter concave meniscus lens, a bi-convex glass-molded aspherical lens, and a high-refractive index glass for the first element, the lens achieves a compact size despite its ultra-wide-angle lens, while maintaining sharp, edge-to-edge imaging performance. Furthermore, by employing high-performance multi-coating "HD Coating," which reduces average reflectance in the visible light range to approximately 50% or less compared to conventional coatings, ghosting and flare are effectively suppressed even under harsh lighting conditions, such as backlighting.
Electromagnetic Diaphragm Mechanism for High-Precision Control The diaphragm mechanism employs an electromagnetic diaphragm. When used in combination with a compatible digital SLR camera, smooth aperture control is possible. Even when aperture changes occur due to large changes in brightness during shooting, smooth exposure changes are achieved, enabling smooth video shooting even under conditions with large exposure differences, such as under stage lighting or in a forest with sunlight filtering through the trees.
Moisture-Resistant Construction The lens is weather-resistant to prevent water droplets from entering the interior. When combined with a weather-resistant PENTAX digital SLR body, reliability is improved even in rainy or foggy weather, or in places where water splashes. Other features include a smudge-resistant SP (Super Protect) coating on the front of the lens. Serial numbers start from 0000001 for the black lens and 1000001 for the silver lens. The in-lens motor-driven AF ensures quiet and smooth autofocusing. The eight-blade circular diaphragm produces beautiful light rays when shooting point light sources, and soft bokeh at widest aperture settings enhances the image quality unique to limited-lens lenses. The Quick Shift Focus System (QFS-A) allows smooth manual focusing without the need for switching operations after focusing with AF.
