Two large, glass-molded double-sided aspherical lens elements in the first group. The second lens element, also a glass-molded double-sided aspherical lens, effectively corrects field curvature, achieving high image quality at the edges of the frame, something that has been difficult to achieve with wide-angle zooms. The large-diameter, glass-molded, double-sided aspherical lens at the first lens element effectively corrects distortion at the wide-angle end. The latest optical design, with its optimal placement of two UD lens elements, suppresses lateral chromatic aberration. Image stabilization equivalent to four shutter speed stops. This is the first wide-angle zoom lens in the high-performance "L Lens" series to feature IS (image stabilization). It achieves image stabilization equivalent to four shutter speed stops. It's ideal for situations where tripods and flashes cannot be used, when keeping ISO sensitivity to a minimum, or when taking advantage of slow shutter speeds. Reliability for Heavy-Duty Use: The redesigned lens barrel structure ensures high durability against repeated zooming and high vibration and shock resistance. The mount, switch panels, zoom ring, and focus ring are dust- and moisture-resistant. The front and rear lens surfaces feature a fluorine coating for oil and water repellency.
