Released December 2014
This telephoto zoom lens offers a wide zoom range while combining high image quality, portability, and ease of use. Mount: Canon EF mount, full-frame compatibility. Focal length: 100-400mm. Aperture: f/4.5-5.6. Filter size: 77mm. [EF100400LIS2] EF100400LIS2 Released December 2014
Dramatically improved image quality thanks to the latest optical design. This cutting-edge optical design, comprised of 21 elements in 16 groups, including one fluorite lens element and one Super UD lens element, offers excellent optical properties and minimizes chromatic aberration, ensuring high image quality even at the edges of the image throughout the entire 100-400mm zoom range. Furthermore, it features Canon's proprietary Air Sphere Coating (ASC) coating technology, which significantly reduces reflections even when light is incident at near-perpendicular angles, significantly reducing flare and ghosting. High durability and dust- and weather-resistant performance for harsh environments. The lens body is stronger than previous models, achieving superior durability. Dust- and weather-resistant construction is also employed on the rubber ring at the mount joint, as well as various switches and rings. A fluorine coating is applied to the front and rear lens surfaces to repel oil and water droplets. Ideal chromatic aberration correction: Fluorite lenses thoroughly eliminate residual chromatic aberration (secondary spectrum) that disrupts image sharpness. Compared to optical lenses, they have a significantly lower refractive index, extremely low dispersion, and excellent transmittance in the infrared and ultraviolet regions, achieving nearly complete elimination of chromatic aberration. This telephoto zoom boasts a wide zoom range, combining high image quality, portability, and ease of use. On models with APS-C sensors, it covers a focal length equivalent to 160-640mm. Image stabilization expands photographic possibilities. IS lenses feature in-lens image stabilization, which shifts part of the optical system parallel to compensate for camera shake when the shutter button is half-pressed. It minimizes camera shake during handheld shooting, ensuring clear, high-quality image quality. It's also effective for close-up shots where minor camera shake is a concern, or for shooting from unstable positions like a moving car or aboard a boat. It also expands photographer flexibility and enables richer photographic expression when capturing subjects beyond the reach of a flash. ASCASC (Air Sphere Coating) significantly reduces flare and ghosting by forming a layer of silicon dioxide and air on top of the vapor-deposited film on the lens surface. By incorporating a certain percentage of air, which has a lower refractive index than optical glass, into the coating, an ultra-low refractive index film is formed. It provides excellent anti-reflection, especially for light incident at near-perpendicular angles, significantly reducing the occurrence of flare and ghosting. Another feature is its superior coating strength compared to other anti-reflection coatings. Fluorine Coating: This coating technology was developed to easily remove dirt from the lens surface. Its high oil- and water-repellent properties allow it to be removed with a dry cloth without the need for solvents. Another feature is that it resists static electricity after dry wiping and is less likely to attract dust. Its smooth, scratch-resistant surface also resists water droplets.
Equipped with a new IS unit that provides four stops of image stabilization. This significantly improves image stabilization, converting it to a shutter speed equivalent to four stops, compared to approximately two stops with conventional lenses. This allows for greater freedom of expression.
Close-up shooting capability, even at 400mm telephoto, with a minimum focusing distance of 0.98m and a maximum magnification of 0.31x. This enables close-up photography of small subjects that was previously unimaginable with telephoto lenses.
Newly designed rotating zoom for instant zoom control. Compared to conventional linear zooms, this rotating zoom makes it easier to lock onto a specific position and fine-tune the composition. The zoom ring rotates just 95° from the wide-angle end of 100mm to the telephoto end of 400mm, enabling instant zoom control. Lens Construction ■ Specifications ■ Lens Construction: 21 elements in 16 groups Number of Aperture Blades: 9 (Circular Aperture) Minimum Aperture: 32-40 (in 1/3-stop increments. 32-38 in 1/2-stop increments.)
