A dramatically smaller and lighter design. To achieve both lightweight and superior imaging performance, the lens incorporates an optical design that strategically positions elements including XA (extreme aspherical) lenses and Super ED glass, as well as an XD (extreme dynamic) linear motor. Compared to the previous model, the FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM, it weighs approximately 20% less (approximately 547g) and is approximately 10.1mm shorter (at 111.5mm). High Resolution Performance: From 16mm to 35mm, the lens delivers sharp images from the center to the periphery, from infinity to close-up, across the entire zoom range. Designed to deliver high contrast even at higher spatial frequencies than before, the lens delivers improved resolution even at maximum aperture. This enables dynamic compositions that emphasize perspective, capturing subjects such as architecture, landscapes, and portraits with high resolution all the way to the periphery. The lens also incorporates five aspherical lenses, including three ultra-high-performance XA lenses. Sony's proprietary aspherical lens processing technology has evolved to achieve even greater freedom in aspherical shapes than before, while maintaining the extremely high surface precision of XA lenses. This enables more advanced correction of various aberrations than before, resulting in even higher image quality and a more compact, lightweight lens. Additionally, two ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) glass elements and one Super ED glass element significantly suppress chromatic aberrations, minimizing color fringing and capturing sharper subjects. The ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) aspherical lens element effectively corrects both chromatic and spherical aberrations simultaneously. Clear images with reduced ghosting and flare. Even in backlit situations with strong light sources such as sunlight, Sony's proprietary Nano AR Coating II delivers high-contrast, clear images. A uniform coating across the entire lens surface significantly reduces ghosting and flare. Improved Close-Up Shooting Performance This lens boasts superior close-up shooting performance compared to the previous model, the FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM. With a minimum focusing distance of 0.22m (across the entire zoom range) and a maximum magnification of 0.32x, you can get close to the subject and capture the perspective unique to wide-angle lenses while using large bokeh effects. The floating focus mechanism also ensures high resolution even at the minimum focusing distance. For example, it allows for flexible composition, such as getting close to the subject to emphasize perspective, expanding the scope of expression.
High-Quality Visual Expression Covering focal lengths from 16mm to 35mm, it is ideal for video recording. Thorough AF performance, operability, and reliability have been thoroughly pursued for professional-grade video recording. Lens design technology suppresses focusing breathing, axis misalignment, and focus shift caused by zooming. It minimizes angle-of-view fluctuations and shaking, enabling smooth video capture. We also paid careful attention to quietness during video recording, employing an XD Linear Motor and the latest aperture unit to minimize operational noise and vibration during video recording.
