The "Series 180" consists of three compact miniature microphones with different polar patterns that meet the requirements of all common studio applications. With its optimized mechanical design and conscious omission of modularity, the "Series 180" is destined for cost-effective production and home recording studios. The KM 183 omnidirectional and MK 185 hypercardioid microphones are based on the design of the KM 184 cardioid microphone, which quickly became the standard in the global studio industry. They are housed in a holding box with a windshield and a stand mount that can be attached to the microphone body or the XLR connector. Compact Miniature Microphone Features The "Series 180" consists of three compact miniature microphones with different polar patterns that meet the requirements of all common studio applications. The "Series 180" microphones are well-suited for a wide range of tasks, particularly in the radio and television fields, thanks to their slender shape and the transmission characteristics described below. The KM 185, a hypercardioid microphone, completes the series. The pressure gradient transducers of the KM 184 and KM 185 provide a very smooth frequency response not only at 0° axis, but also for lateral (off-axis) sound incidence. In typical use, there is no coloration of sound over a wide pickup angle. The KM 184 uses the same capsule as the KM 84, but the microphone differs slightly in its zero-degree frequency response: the KM 184 features a slight increase at 9 kHz, a characteristic that was introduced with great success in the KM 140. The result is a fresher, livelier tonal balance compared to the KM 84, which has a flat frequency response throughout that range. This difference in frequency is achieved by a slight modification to the rear of the capsule, which eliminates resonances. The hypercardioid characteristic of the KM 185 means that it has minimum sensitivity at a 120-degree angle and attenuates sound incident from the sides or rear by approximately 10 dB. The "Series 180" microphones share the same transformerless circuitry used in the KM 100 system, resulting in superior technical specifications. Compared to the KM 84, the KM 184's dynamic range has increased by 24 dB, primarily due to a reduction in self-noise level to just 22 dB (CCIR) and an increase in sound pressure handling capacity to 138 dB. The microphone operates without any problems even when connected to unbalanced inputs, such as DAT recorders. Like all Neumann microphones, the Series 180's output is balanced and phantom-powered (48 V). The Series 180 is a good choice for anyone looking for a high-quality miniature microphone but without the complex modular KM 100 system, which remains part of the Neumann product range. The mechanical structure is simplified; for example, the capsule and output stage cannot be separated from each other. This makes the Series 180 an economical alternative without sacrificing the electroacoustic functionality users expect from Neumann microphones.
