This is the ideal Neumann microphone, designed to complement the broadcast line. Its functional design, fine-tuned and optimized for professional broadcast studios and individual requirements, ensures this is a microphone of exceptional quality. Its large-diaphragm condenser capsule and cardioid polar pattern make the BCM 104 ideal for faithfully reproducing speech and music. For example, its frequency response is flat up to 3 kHz, with a gradual boost at higher frequencies. If needed, an internal switch can be used to compensate for the proximity effect and reduce sensitivity by 14 dB. The BCM 104's versatility allows it to be used in a wide range of applications, from news, roundtable discussions, and radio DJing to music recording. Mechanical Features: The microphone headgrille can be easily removed for cleaning by simply twisting. For hygiene reasons, Neumann offers optional headgrilles with five colored rings, allowing each announcer to use their own headgrille. A fine gauze strip is mounted on the frame holder in front of the capsule, serving as a built-in pop screen. Broadcast line microphones feature elastic mounts for structure-borne noise, compatible with standard broadcast segment microphone arms. Acoustic Characteristics: The K04 large-diaphragm capsule housed in the microphone headgrille has a flat frequency response up to 3 kHz. The high frequencies are boosted by 2 dB. This microphone characteristic is achieved without the use of resonance effects, allowing the microphone to deliver excellent transient response and transmit all transient phenomena without coloring the music or voice. Built-in Pop Screen: The pop screen not only prevents plosive pops in vocal recordings, but also prevents unwanted particles, such as moist breath, nicotine, and food particles, from landing on the diaphragm. The pop screen can be removed for cleaning without the use of tools. Electrical Features: Instead of a transformer coupling the microphone output to the power supply voltage, the BCM 104 uses a transformer-like electronic circuit that provides excellent common-mode rejection. Interference induced on the balanced modulation line is thus effectively suppressed. With extremely low self-noise of 7 dB (A-weighted) and an overload characteristic extending to 138 dB SPL, the BCM 104 has a dynamic range of 131 dB (A-weighted). Filter and Pre-Attenuation: The BCM 104 amplifier operates linearly down to 20 Hz. An active filter effectively suppresses signals below this frequency. To compensate for the proximity effect, the microphone incorporates a switch-activated electronic high-pass filter. This filter reduces frequencies below 100 Hz by 12 dB/octave. A 14 dB pre-attenuation switch is provided to adjust the sensitivity, if necessary, to the circuitry designed for dynamic microphones. This correspondingly increases the self-noise level. Both switches are located inside the microphone housing, as they are typically operated only once when a broadcast facility is set up. Mounting: The preferred mode of operation is to hang the broadcast line microphone on a standard studio boom arm. Thread adapters are included to fit different connection threads. Both the capsule and microphone are resiliently suspended within the mount to provide protection from structure-borne noise. The optional SG 5 swivel mount allows for further angle of the microphone by ±90°. Acoustic operating principle: Pressure gradient transducer. Directivity: Cardioid.
