The "Series 180" consists of three compact miniature microphones with different polar patterns that meet the requirements of all typical studio applications. With its optimized mechanical structure and conscious lack of modularity, the "Series 180" is destined for economical production and home recording studios. The KM 183 omnidirectional and MK 185 hypercardioid microphones are based on the design of the KM 184 cardioid microphone, which quickly became the standard in the global studio industry. They are housed in a holding box with a windshield and a stand mount that can be attached to the microphone body or the XLR connector. With their slender shape and transmission characteristics described below, the "Series 180" is suitable for a wide range of tasks, especially in the fields of radio and television. Compact Miniature Microphone Features The "Series 180" consists of three compact miniature microphones with different polar patterns that meet the requirements of all typical studio applications. With its optimized mechanical structure and conscious lack of modularity, the Series 180 is destined for cost-effective productions and home recording studios. Thanks to their slender shape and the transmission characteristics described below, the Series 180 is particularly suited to a wide range of tasks in the radio and television fields. The KM 183 and KM 184 microphones are the successors of the proven KM 83 and KM 84, which have been used successfully worldwide since the 1970s. The KM 185, a hypercardioid microphone, completes the series. The KM 183 is a pressure transducer with a 7 dB boost at 10 kHz in the free field. In a diffuse sound field, it has a flat frequency response. The KM 184 and KM 185 pressure gradient transducers feature a very smooth frequency response not only at 0° axis, but also at lateral (off-axis) sound incidence. In typical use, there is no coloration of sound over a wide pickup angle. The KM 184 uses the same capsule as the KM 84, but the microphone has a slightly different 0° frequency response: the KM 184 features a slight boost at 9 kHz, a characteristic introduced with great success in the KM 140. The result is a fresher, more lively tonal balance compared to the KM 84, which has a flat frequency response throughout that range. This difference is achieved by a slight modification to the rear of the capsule, eliminating resonance. The KM 185's hypercardioid characteristic has a minimum sensitivity at an angle of 120 degrees and attenuates sound incident from the sides or rear by approximately 10 dB. The "Series 180" microphones share the same transformerless circuitry used in the KM 100 system, resulting in superior technical specifications. Compared to the KM 84, the KM 184's dynamic range has increased by 24 dB, primarily due to a reduction in the self-noise level to just 22 dB (CCIR) and an increase in sound pressure handling capacity to 138 dB. The microphone operates without any problems even when connected to unbalanced inputs, such as those of a DAT recorder. Like all Neumann microphones, the "Series 180" output is balanced and phantom (48 V) powered. The "Series 180" is a good choice for anyone looking for a high-quality miniature microphone, but without the complex modular KM 100 system that remains part of the Neumann product range. The mechanical structure is simplified - for example, the capsule and output stage cannot be separated from each other - making the "Series 180" an economical alternative without giving up the electro-acoustic features users expect from a Neumann microphone.
