・Matte black finish. The SF-2 is an active ribbon microphone, an improved version of Royer's original SF-1 ribbon microphone, powered by 48V phantom power. Designed primarily for recording classical and acoustic instruments, the SF-2 delivers high-quality audio performance through its dedicated active circuitry. The SF-2's output is -38dB, comparable to that of a typical condenser microphone, allowing you to choose your microphone preamp without worrying about gain. Active circuitry and custom-designed FETs result in a noiseless design with self-noise of less than 18dB. The SF-2's magnet, pole piece, and transducer architecture produce a wide, balanced frequency response without sharp peaks or dips. The 1.8-micron ribbon element delivers excellent transient performance. Tonal character is unaffected by changes in microphone distance, orientation, or axis. GainRoyer's active ribbon microphones have sensitivity comparable to that of condenser microphones, allowing them to be used with any microphone and preamp. Since typical ribbon microphones are 15-30dB less sensitive, a high-output, high-quality mic pre was required when recording quiet sources like acoustic instruments, vocals, and room ambience. A discrete circuit using ultra-low-noise FETs and a large transformer achieves high sensitivity of -38dB while minimizing self-noise. Impedance Matching: The SF-2's ribbon element is always optimally loaded by the active circuitry. The SF-2 delivers 100% of its tone, regardless of the input characteristics of the connected microphone preamp. Its low-impedance output eliminates signal loss, even over long cable runs. Proper impedance matching is essential when using ribbon microphones. Mismatching can result in a loss of core and low end, reduced sensitivity, and overall poor performance. Royer ribbon microphones provide optimal resistance regardless of the downstream preamp, ensuring consistent performance. There's no need to worry about damage to the ribbon element from phantom power, incorrect cable connections, or inrush currents. The SF-2 Story: Before the SF-2 was released, as many as 20 prototypes were tested in major recording studios, orchestras, and halls. It was well-received in classical settings, including choirs, piano, woodwinds, and strings, and also in studios focusing on acoustic instruments and singers/songwriters. As a result, the prototype never returned to Royer...
