This hidden gem, born from the atavistic inheritance of a pop heritage that stretches back to The Beatles, Badfinger, The Hollies, and The Zombies, is now revealed! As a former British colony, Singapore saw an influx of cultural influences. The guitar band boom of the 1960s saw the emergence of October Cherries. In addition to their success at home, they were one of the first bands to expand into the UK and the Netherlands. However, after suffering major setbacks from illegal recordings and long hair laws, they decided to start afresh. They relocated to Belgium and performed under the name Truck. Jay Shotham (vocals, bass), Peter Dias (guitar), and Richard Karn (drums) released the album Surprise, Surprise (1974), primarily featuring remakes of their October Cherries material. Released on the band's own label, Baar Records, the album was a chart hit in Malaysia, a neighboring and larger music market, and also gained popularity among Malay communities in Europe. While drawing on a sound emanating from the "Pop Yeah Yeah" craze in Malaysia in the 1960s, the album approached psychedelia with layers of guitar and synthesizers. "Surprise, Surprise" added a rock touch, while "Broken Chair" used synth-simulated strings, incorporating contemporary sound elements unique to the 1970s. They then traveled to England to record One Fine Day (1976) under the name Cole Track. In addition to numerous new originals, the album features self-covers such as "One Fine Day," "Lay Down Your Love," and "This Is a Love Song." Mixed at the legendary Abbey Road Studios and mastered at Pye Studios, the album captures the spirit of Britain, the home of rock and pop. Even the same songs are arranged in more basic ways, revealing their core. The members returned to Singapore and resumed their activities as October Cherries. Jay Shotham passed away in 2019, but their music, including their signature track "Far Away Now," continues to be heard around the world today. After half a century, these two albums from their period of global exploration are finally being released in Japan for the first time.
