Sharp, Nothing short of Perfection!
Post date : Thursday, Oct 17 2019
The image quality from this lens is, as other reviews indicate, nothing short of spectacular. I was a bit hesitant to invest due to the price but this investment was definitely worth while. I had been using prime lenses for events, and just going back and forth was such a hassle.I use this lens with D7000/D7100, and it works great. The image quality is sharp, very sharp. I feel more confident with this baby and works great in low light conditions. My prime lenses barely get used during event photography now.The only thing I do not like about the lens is the weight. It is heavy. My wrists do hurt after a long period of time.

Worth the investment

Before this lens, I primarily switched between the 35,50, and 85 G Prime lenses. I found it tedious having to switch between lenses when hiking, so I opted for a zoom that wouldn't sacrifice image quality. This lens is tack sharp wide open, and I was blown away by the colors and the contrast that it produces. The AF is possibly the best out of all of my lenses. I also take a lot of fast paced street shots when traveling, and the AF focuses on the subject in such a blistering speed. This is definitely one lens that I can be confident about for any photo assignment.

Stunning - like a bag of primes in a single lens
Post date : Thursday, Sep 19 2019
Having shot Canon for years, I have several years of experience with the Canon 24-70 Mark I and 35L, in addition to numerous Nikon primes like the 85 1.4, 50 1.4 and 24 2.8 and the 17-50 DX zoom. At f/2.8, this is the sharpest lens of the bunch. This is the best standard zoom I've ever used.Build quality is exceptional. Full metal body - old school build with weight to match. The zoom mechanism is machined and feels like a precise, mechanical device. The focus ring is exceptionally smooth. The bayonet hood is large, well built and with a locking mechanism. It is very easy to mount. For a standard zoom, this is a large lens, but the smaller diameter make it very easy to handhold.AF speed and accuracy is absolute top tier - it is exceptionally silent and dead accurate. Speed is excellent - AF acquisition is virtually instantaneous. My copy is +/- 0 mAF on a d800. Low light AF accuracy is among the best I've ever used.Color is great - deep, contrasty and fully saturated.Sharpness is incredible - easily equal to any prime I've used. On the d800, with my usual sharpness settings, the images are almost too sharp.I've seen no coma or halation effects of note. Flare is well controlled, and contrast is maintained in difficult lighting. The bokeh is very good overall, and excellent for a zoom lens. The aperture is nine-bladed and out of focus elements are nicely rounded. For a lens this sharp, the bokeh was surprisingly good. Distortions are notable for CA and barrel at the wide end. Both are compensated when shooting JPG and are easily fixed when processing RAW data. The price is high, but affordable relative to the Canon 24-70 Mark II. The only fixed downside is the size and weight of the lens - it's not a subtle look. The trade off is worth it.Excellent lens

Must have lens

I love this lens! If the 70-200 is great for outdoors, this lens is amazing for indoor, and outdoor, photography. I love using it for weddings, family sessions, and with my own family capturing their life. It is heavy at first, but once you get used to it, you won't notice. It takes crisp, clear pictures from a distance, and up close. I have included three pictures I took in the evening so you can see how it handles low light as well.

Stellar lens

I own many Nikon mount lenses, from several makers, including the predecessor to this lens, the 28-70 AF-S. The 28-70 AF-S is an excellent lens, but is prone to flare badly at times. When the 24-70 AF-S was announced, I was hesitant to buy one, because I wasn't unhappy with the 28-70 AF-S and I didn't see how they'd improve this mid-range zoom. After the 24-70 AF-S had been out a while and glowing user reports were piling up, I decided to buy one to see for myself, how well it performed. I am impressed. The lens is sharp wide open, from 24mm to 70mm and stopping down to f/4 to f/5.6 brings incredible sharpness. I've yet to notice flare, which is a very welcome improvement to me. The AF-S motor is very fast and accurate on my d300 and d700 bodies. The extra 4mm on the wide end that it has over the 28-70 AF-S, seems like a small thing, but in practice, is another welcome feature of this lens.In short, this lens is one of the best that I've used. Operation is smooth and fast, and the images it produces are excellent, with good contrast, color and sharpness.5 stars for this one. I'm very pleased with my purchase. It makes a great companion to the 70-200vr or my 105 f/2 DC when shooting events or candid PJ style portraits.

Wonderful lens!

Since I purchased this lens, it's been my walk-around lens. I'm primarily shoot more intimate landscape/nature images, so this lens provides just enough wide angle and medium-range telephoto for my full-frame camera. The only issue I see with the design is the difficulty taking the lens on and off with the hood in the storage position. IE, with the hood in the locked position over the lens, the hood covers most of the barrel. The focal length ring is exposed, but one cannot take a lens on and off with that movable ring. I therefore have to install the hood at the end of the lens prior to putting the lens on, and keep the hood on until the lens is removed. I understand why the design is such, as the hood is very deep to allow the lens to move from 24mm to 70mm. Other than this idiosyncrasy, the lens superb.

As a wedding photographer, having this lens is a must. I know that some people preferred to shoot with primes since it has a better depth of field and you can open the aperture wider than this lens to allow more light to shoot on a low light situation.Well let me tell you this. I used this lens mainly for the ceremony itself, cocktail hours, reception and some of the formal group shots. It is 70% of the time sticking in front of my camera delivering sharp images (though it has barrel distortion at times but that can be fixed using lightroom lens correction) It is that good. The other 30% split between tiltshift 45mm, 50mm f1.8 and 85mm f1.8, 60mm macro. This lens has comparable sharpness to 24 prime, 35mm prime and 50 prime. I'm comparing sharpness not depth of field. I would love to get that 24mm prime but no budget for it at the moment.Buy this lens you wouldn't regret it. It is built like a tank and it delivers. It is truly a photo journalist lens.Note: i did noticed slight unsmoothing moment between 24-50mm when i change the zoom. I know lots of poeple that have this problem. It doesn't change the image quality though.

Great for all types of professional use

I love this lens! I’ve always loved the 24-70mm f2.8 and it’s super sharp. For everything that I used it on so far, it hasn’t failed me yet. The lens is always on my camera and has become my work horse of a lens. It’s lead me to purchase a secondary 24-70mm too!It has a great build quality and feels sturdy in my hands and gives me confidence whenever I use it or when I accidentally bump into things. I always have my lens hood on it so Incase if I do accidentally drop the lens, the front glass element is protected and the lens hood saves the lens and breaks instead of the glass. It’s happened to me once in the past. Much rather buy a new lens hood then a new lens. So always have the lens hood on!The weather sealing is great on this lens! Paired with both my D750 and D850, it’s unstoppable in rain, snow, or a nice sunny day, it’s able to hold up so well in those harsh conditions and I’m extremely happy with that as well. There aren’t really many flaws with this lens that I’ve seen so far. But I’ll re-edit this once I find any!
