Plastic model that requires assembly and painting
Adhesive, tools, paint, etc. are required separately.
1/48 scale unpainted plastic assembly kit
Completed size: total length 219mm, total width 260mm
Product introduction The F4U-5, which can be said to be the culmination of the F4U Corsair series, was completely modernized and produced after World War II, and was the fastest reciprocating fighter aircraft in the Navy at the time, exceeding the top speed of the F8F-2.
The engine mounting position has been moved forward, and the cowling itself has also become slightly larger, resulting in an appearance that emphasizes the length of the nose.
In addition, the carburetor air intake on the underside of the nose was split into two, so the lower left and right sides were bulged (rice ball-shaped), creating a frontal shape that became a major feature of the F4U-5.
The F4U-5N is a reciprocating single-seat night fighter. The fuselage is basically the same as the F4U-5, and the biggest difference is the radar installed on the right wing, but the radio equipment is doubled, so it is auxiliary behind the vertical tail. It is equipped with an antenna, an autopilot system to reduce the burden on the pilot, and a flameproof exhaust pipe to ensure the pilot's visibility during night flights.Furthermore, a flameproof plate has been installed at the rear of the exhaust pipe.
The F4U-5NL is equipped with de-icing rubber boots on the leading edge of each wing, and a water-methanol liquid injection type de-icing device is installed on the leading edge of the propeller and windshield. It is a cold region specification aircraft that is compatible with the extremely cold North Korea. There were 214 F4U-5Ns and 101 F4U-5NLs.
Lt. Guy P. Bordelon of the 3rd Composite Squadron, Detachment D (VC-3 Det. D) flew F4U-5N (Bu. No. 124453) from June 29 to July 1953. He shot down five aircraft in 17 days, earning him the Triple Threat Ace honor of being the only night fighter ace, reciprocating aircraft ace, and naval ace in the Korean War.
Captain Bordelon made 35 sorties with the aforementioned F4U-5N, leaving the aircraft behind, but the F4U-5N (Bu. No. 124453) was crashed by an Air Force pilot shortly thereafter.
There was a time when F4U-5N (Bu.No. 124453) had 5 shot down marks, but the box art shows it when 2 aircraft were shot down.
