Tokugawa Ieyasu spent 17 years in Hamamatsu from 1569 (Eiroku 12) to 1586 (Tensho 14). It is said that the Honmaru was moved to the current Hamamatsu Castle. Hamamatsu Castle came to be called a 'success castle' because many of the lords of Hamamatsu Castle held important positions in the shogunate while they were in the castle.
