★★★★★ Much success with this new Sigma
Post date : Saturday, Oct 19 2019
I purchased this lens as soon as it became available for sale and haven't regretted it. I do have a couple of the Canon L series lenses (70-200mm f/4 IS, and a 300mm f/4 IS) but this Sigma lens is the one that stays on my Canon 50D that is my main camera. Most of the time I am shooting at 400mm but have used the rest of the range too. I do miss having a tripod collar but it hasn't slowed my photography down as this lens has a manageable weight that I am comfortable with. I am in my 60s and weigh around the 140 pound mark, if that helps give you an idea of manageable weight for an older guy like myself. The Sigma dock for this lens was also a nice addition to my gear, especially with its ability to micro-focus adjust for 16 separate positions. All in all I am very impressed with this lens. I also have a Sigma 70mm macro lens that I think highly of. I will try to add some photos taken with this new Sigma 100-400mm lens. These photos were taken after a downpour of rain when a couple of Cedar Waxwings were enjoying drying off in the sunlight.

★★★★★ Amazing.

Love it. I have used the 400mm f/5.6 and the Sigma 150-600mm. Very sharp, accurate if slightly slow focus. I do not seem to need the Sigma Dock. I was going to buy a used Canon 400mm f/5.6, but that is totally not needed. The pictures below were shot on a 12mp Canon T3, ISO 400, f/6.3, 1/1250. They were shot in Raw. I added a very very tiny extra sharpening (60 out of a possible 400) in aftershot3. All else is as shot2 year update:I still like the lens, but I mostly avoid it b/c my Canon 55-250mm is so much lighter/smaller/more reliable. I have had mechanical problems with the Sigma (the focus stops working for a few MINUTES periodically. The focus motor will make noise but the focus does not adjust). It was repaired once by Sigma and now needs to be repaired again. I took off one star.

★★★★★ Great for Wildlife Photography
Post date : Monday, Aug 12 2019
I primarily focus on large wild game at a distance and birds, all in National Forests where lighting, distance judging, and weather are often difficult to count on. This lens more than makes up for these issues because of its dependability, ease of use, reasonable weight, and price. It has given me the opportunity to capture bald eagles, elk, humming birds, and many other animals in the wild.

★★★★★ Excellent

Far better than the Sony 18-300mm lens that preceded it. Even though it requires an MC-11 adapter, autofocus is quick and accurate. I am getting significantly better detail and resolution than with the Sony lens. Very reasonably priced.

★★★★★ Birding Lens Gold.
Post date : Wednesday, Jun 5 2019
I'm a birder and I've had exceptional results with this lens. It's a big lens, and even though I had read the specs my mind wasn't fully prepared for just how big... compare to Canon 75-300mm, and that's without the lens hood. Nonetheless it's light enough to carry afield and shoot without a tripod. I have it mounted on an EOS Rebel T6, and while I was initially shooting a bit dark I've managed to fine tune things to get outstanding shots, even in imperfect light. A camera with a greater range of ISO speeds shouldn't have any problem. The optical balance on this is immaculate and keeps the clean shots coming under any conditions. Example photo 1, The snowy egret was imaged at what I estimate to be 30 yards, in late-day light coming between clouds. Example 2 with the scissors involved a dim indoor setting at a painfully slow 1/8 of a second, and it's CRISP. Focuses blisteringly fast in short range (1.6-6m) mode and pretty dang fast in long range (6-infinity). Can be sluggish if you're putting it on full range, especially if you're shooting around cover. Why are you in full mode when shooting from cover? Oh, right, because you have the option of full time manual override. The zoom can be push-pull operated for versatile and adaptable telephoto shooting. If that's your focus (ha) this is a fantastic lens to have. It's also five hundred bucks cheaper than Canon's own 400mm telephoto. You want to get incredible shots of BIRD ACTION while knee deep in swamp water, right?

★★★★★ Excellent Clarity and Zoom range

This lens is as good as the Canon 100-400. Image is very clear. I did the firmware upgrade after I bought it and the image stabilization became much better

★★★★★ Great lens if it had 1 stop better aperture and better stabilization.
Post date : Wednesday, Apr 10 2019
Great value. Best lens to have if you have a crop sensor. It’s sharper than the canon version if comparing on a crop camera. However, I have the sx50 superzoom and can get better pics than this lens simply because of the nature of how the stabilization works. Using this lens at full zoom in shade, cloudy days, or anything other than full daylight and it will likely give you motion blur in most pics unless you crank up the iso.

★★★★★ Love the photos I'm capturing with this lens!
Post date : Wednesday, Apr 3 2019
I originally rented this lens and also the equivalent Canon (which costs $1300 more) to try them both out. I needed an in-between lens (I have a Tamrom 600mm I use for photographing bald eagles but is HEAVY) and this Sigma fits the bill. It's lightweight considering the zoom it packs and I've been pleased with the photos I'm capturing right out of the camera (with hummingbirds being my favorite subject!) I just couldn't justify the price difference with the similar Canon lens. I'm an intermediate amateur backyard photographer (if there is such a thing!)
