★★★★☆  The perfect jack-of-all-trades lens!
Post date : Sunday, Oct 13 2019

If there was only one lens I could chose to bring along with me anywhere, it would be this Sigma 17-70mm without a doubt!I rarely have a specific photo shoot in mind when I go anywhere. So usually I would bring two or three lenses with me just to cover all the focal lengths. But that obviously gets bulky and heavy pretty quick. This lens covers wide-angle at 17mm with f/2.8 all the way to medium/telephoto at 70mm with f/4. With that range, I don’t even need to bring anything else with me on a daily basis which is a huge deal! It’s a fast lens that still stops down enough to photograph silky waterfalls with slower shutter speeds. At the larger apertures, the out of focus areas (bokeh) are not super smooth, but still look great and not at all a deal breaker. Like other Sigmas, it’s also not as sharp at larger apertures, but still not a deal breaker. The autofocus is fast and accurate! The motor makes just a little bit of noise, but I hardly ever notice it. I enjoy photographing motocross races which are very fast paced. With the continuous autofocus set, it tracks the racers no problem. The optical stabilization also comes in handy during the races. I’m able to get blurred action shots with the racers perfectly sharp. With all the great features of the Sigma 17-70mm, coupled with the unbeatable price, it’s the perfect lens for the photography enthusiast that wants to bring versatility and range to their run-and-gun setup, but not break the bank.

★★★★☆  Perfection
Post date : Sunday, Sep 8 2019

I lucked out and happened to buy this at a steal of a price ($270 new). I own 5 total lenses (including this one) for my photo business. When compared to the Nikon kit 18-55mm lens, this thing absolutely blows it out of the water in picture quality, build and design. Pictures are tack sharp and it’s great to use when I’m not shooting with my prime lenses (35mm and 50mm). You won’t find a better “travel lens” for under $500. This is a gem....

★★★★☆  Great Lens
Post date : Wednesday, Jun 26 2019

So far this lens is excellent, it quickly became my favorite lens to grab. I really wanted a lens i could carry around and use for 90% of my photo needs and this fits the bill. I also like how it's relatively compact/lightweight compared to similar zoomz because i take it hiking with me all the time. For me it is the perfect range of focal lengths; very versatile.

★★★★☆  Sigma Lens Review.
Post date : Wednesday, Jun 5 2019

Keeping in mind I haven't tried a new lens in 7 years I was a little puzzled when I noticed upon arrival there was no aperture ring. After doing some research I discovered a lot of lenses no longer do. Aperture is controlled threw the camera body, not a lens ring. Learned something new. I needed a short zoom/macro for table top photography for my new Nikon. The fit to the camera body was snug as expected but not impossible to get on. Being a new lens and body it was to be expected. I only use the manual focus so this is the only thing that was a bit tricky. This lens is really meant to be used as auto focus. Using it manually the focus ring is not firm and rotates a bit too easy than I’m used to. It requires a steady hand to adjust focus and keep there without moving it out of alignment when I remove my hand. It can be done but as I said it is really meant for auto focus. Either way it does produce excellent sharpness. When In Macro mode I can get as close as 1” from front lens element to subject with very good sharpness. A good deal of light comes threw the lens, so much so I needed to reduce the power on my mono lights to avoid overexposure. For my use this lens works great.

★★★★☆  Love it... Sigma is now a player!
Post date : Saturday, May 25 2019

I was looking for a multipurpose lens for vacation to mount on my 7D when I stumbled upon this one. I had seen the reviews for the new Sigma 35 f1.4 Art Series on canonrumors.com and was very impressed with what I was reading. So, I thought I should give this lens a try. After all, it was a mere $499 vs. $2100 for the Canon 24-70 f2.8 L II with which I have spent some real world time. You see, I have just under 100 weddings under my belt in the past 6 years. Yet I haven't ever owned a zoom lens, since I shoot weddings primarily with fast primes (Canon 24 f1.4 L, Canon 50 1.2 L, Canon 85 f1.8, and Canon 100 f2.8 L macro). At times, I have rented zooms when I knew a certain event would require shooting without carrying multiple bodies or changing lenses. I have shot with the Canon 17-55 f2.8 IS and the 24-70, and I must say... this lens competes very well with both of them at a much lower price! The Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM has a longer ranger than the Canon 17-55 IS, while still offering you image stabilization, which the 24-70 f2.8 L II does NOT have! And if it did, just how much would Canon think they could charge you for it? That lens already costs as much as my first car!In conclusion, buy this lens if you are looking for sharp optics, fast focus, and a decent amount of aperture to boot. Check out my sample photo of my wife cutting the neighbor girl's hair... I took it from my desk, hand held at 1/60, 70mm f4, indoors with only ambient light, OS on, and at ISO 6400. Its not a great composition, but you can see the excellent color rendition and clarity of this glass.Very happy.

★★★★☆  Good Sharp Lens - High Quality Images for Affordable Price
Post date : Sunday, Apr 28 2019

I upgraded my camera from a Nikon D5100 to D7500 (instead of D500) and with the money I saved, I decided to get a nice mid-zoom lens. For the price, this is a really outstanding lens. More affordable than the Nikor lens of the same zoom, it takes sharp photos in all focal lengths. The images above are 17, 40, and 70mm respectively and are unedited. All are sharp and show great color and detail. The fact that this lens goes all the way to F2.8 is enough to buy it right away. It can take sharper photos in lower light since the aperture is open wider.I've had it for a day, and love it. Also, it got here a lot faster than the shipping estimate which is a bonus.

★★★★☆  Great APS-C Lens For Canon T6s
Post date : Wednesday, Apr 3 2019

I purchased this lens just over a year ago. I've used it casually for both indoor / outdoor photography and had good results. Now over a year old, its been to Europe twice and I used it almost exclusively on a recent trip to France. We all want to take as many lenses as possible on a shoot, but when you are traveling, you often have to make sacrifices. This was a great lens for the trip.I shot indoors, outdoors, landscapes, with and without flash in some incredibly dark places. I was very impressed with the 17- 70's performance as a multi-purpose lens. 17-23 gives you great wide angle options for larger rooms, buildings and gardens. 30-50 worked well allowing me to compose and fill the frame with a subject at near distance. 70mm helped bring things in I just couldn't get close enough to.The lenses focus is extremely sharp (at all focal lengths). Of course every lens has its "sweet spot" range but I have no complaints here for a lens at this price point. Color and clarity are also excellent. The focus ring is nice and wide, smooth (with the right amount of drag), and is easy to grip when manual focus is used. There is no zoom creep when you carry the lens barrel down and hiking. It stays put (retracted). On this trip, I visited several exhibits that did not allow any flash photography. This is where a F2.8 lens is really useful. I was happy with the raw captures and got some compliments on many of the photos. The "OS" on this lens is great. You can be tired, or a little shakie and no one will be the wiser. I've only shot a handful of video with this lens, but like stills, its performance has been nothing less than excellent. This lens is a nice step up from a comparable lens in a "kit" camera package, but is by no means professional grade. That said, you will notice a big difference between the photos shot with this lens in comparison to a "kit lens" that comes with your camera. You'll be VERY happy! It's quiet, takes super sharp photos and is extremely versatile. Price new (discovery japan) or refurb from direct from Sigma is extremely appealing. The pics below are Mendocino, Liverpool, Sausalito, Paris and the Loire Valley.
